Jan Söderblom

Jan SöderblomViolinist and conductor Jan Söderblom (b. 1970) emerged as a young and versatile performer in the early 1980s. Having studied the violin, he began his career as a soloist and a chamber musician; later, he has been expanding his horizons by appearing as a conductor too. He is the artistic director of the Lappeenranta City Orchestra since 2000, and the artistic derector of Joroinen Music Festival and of Musica Fiskars. Söderblom has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician and guest conductor in Finland and the other Nordic countries as well as all around Europe, in Australia, in Japan, in China and in South Africa. He has appeared as a soloist with most Finnish orchestras and abroad with the Japan Philharmonic Orhcestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra. He has toured Germany with the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, Japan with the West Helsinki Chamber Orchestra and Greece with the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra, and he has appeared with the Vivo Orchestra at the St Petersburg Philharmonia,. He has further appeared with the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa and the Belgrade Strings chamber orchestra.

Jan Söderblom played violin with the New Helsinki Quartet from 1982 to 2001, during which time the ensemble achieved success in the Concertino Praga competition and the London String Quartet Competition and appeared numerous times at major European venues. As a member of the Quartet, Söderblom collaborated with artists such as Bella Davidovich, Barbara Hendricks, Ralf Gothóni, Olli Mustonen and Kari Kriikku. The Quartet premiered several works, made recordings for radio and TV, and recorded discs of music by Sibelius, Grieg, Janáček and Dvořak.

Söderblom has appeared as leader with the Finnish and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestras and with the Tapiola Sinfonietta. He has also appeared as a guest member of the Salzburg Camerata Academica and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. Jan Söderblom studied conducting with Jorma Panula and Leif Segerstam at the Sibelius Academy, graduating in 2001. He has appeared as conductor e.g with the Helsinki, Turku and Tampere Philharmonic Orchestras and the Sinfonia Lahti, the Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, the Virtuosi di Kuhmo, the Belgrade Strings Chamber Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur and Scottish Chamber Orchestra. In recent seasons, he has regularly appeared at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, conducting performances of Janáček’s opera The Makropoulos Affair, and e.g. premiering Thomas Jennefelt’s opera Sport och fritid (Sport and leisure, 2005) and Daniel Börtz’s opera Svall (2006). First visits at the pit of the Finnish Natiolal opera in 2005 led to immediate reinvitations for ballet productions in 2006 and 2007, and Pacius opera production Kung Kalrs Jakt (premiere in 2007). Jan Söderblom was nominated the Finland Festivals Young Artist of the Year in 1991, and in 2002 he received the international Chivas Baton Award. Jan Söderblom plays a Nicolo Gagliano violin from 1726.
